Center for Gerontology

Why Should I Earn the Gerontology Certificate?

Practicum/Field Study

The Center for Gerontology facilitates the placement and supervision of students in a practicum that offers direct contact with older adults, with agencies, programs that serve elderly people, or in research or administrative positions.

Practicum sites and the types of work involved vary to match the student's particular academic and career interests and to build on previous experience. Students may work at such sites as an agency on aging, a home health care corporation, a nursing home, a hospice, an older adults' association, an elderhostel, or a training and human resource division within industry.

A model adult day services center housed in Wallace Hall on the Virginia Tech campus provides a needed service to the community and serves as a teaching and research laboratory. Students may fulfill practicum requirements in this facility or in off-campus settings.
